該劇以多角度探討視角、偏見和創(chuàng)傷等問題，其靈感來源于一對中西部夫婦收養(yǎng)了一個患有罕見侏儒癥的女孩的令人不安的故事。然而，當他們開始將這個女孩與自己的三個親生孩子一起撫養(yǎng)時，女孩的年齡和背景卻變得撲朔迷離。

　　滿清宣統(tǒng)三年，亦即西元一九一一年，武昌起義，四方云從，南粵北疆，鐵血共和。
　　西關(guān)城為西北重鎮(zhèn)，地當絲綢之路要沖，歷來為兵家必爭之地。武昌起義的消息傳到西關(guān)，同盟會骨干陸漸離大喜過望。清軍守備吳天澤自覺清覆亡將至，有心與同盟會合作，他說服了陸漸離的義弟龍三，龍三深知吳天澤在此地根深蒂固，就算換了天下，與他公開抗衡也會鬧得兩敗俱傷，所以，他接受了吳天澤的利誘，答應說服陸漸離，三分天下，一同坐江山。
　　龍三帶吳天澤來陸家談判，遭到陸漸離嚴辭拒絕，吳天澤違背了對龍三的諾言，對陸漸離以死相逼。陸漸離自殺成仁，他的妻子蘭疏影僥幸逃脫，在好心人伊春德家產(chǎn)下一女，蘭疏影決意報仇，覺得女兒不能擔此重任，就將親生孩子與伊春德妻子剛生下的男嬰調(diào)換，自己帶這個伊家后代遠走他鄉(xiāng)，并為他取名為陸天明……

故事背景在1915年京杭大運河上的窯灣古鎮(zhèn)，坊間傳言青陶龍鼎在窯灣古鎮(zhèn)現(xiàn)世，于是一心復辟帝制的封建余孽，外國文物販子，護國討袁的愛國人士紛紛來到窯灣，掀起了一場尋寶，奪寶，護寶的傳奇。
